OpenShift Container Platform gives IT operations secure, enterprise-grade Kubernetes for policy-based
controls and automation for application management. Cluster services, scheduling, and
orchestration provide load-balancing and auto-scaling capabilities. Security features prevent
tenants from compromising other applications or the underlying host. And because OpenShift
Container Platform can attach persistent storage directly to Lin.
OpenShift includes Kubernetes for container orchestration and management. Users access Kubernetes via a secure API to deploy pods, which include one or more containers managed as a single atomic unit. Kubernetes schedules containers across a number of server hosts (i.e., Nodes) and OpenShift users can extend the scheduler with their own placement policies.
Red Hat is heavily engaged with the Kubernetes community and, along with Google, is among the top contributors to this vibrant community. OpenShift provides direct access to the Kubernetes core for scheduling containers using Kubernetes CLI. In addition, OpenShift adds several features to Kubernetes to simplify adoption of Kubernetes for developers and operation teams. OpenShift is Kubernetes, along with Red Hat’s operational experience of maintaining secure enterprise platforms.
OpenShift automates the process of building new container images for all of your users. OpenShift can run standard docker builds based on the dockerfiles you provide. OpenShift also provides a “source-to-image” feature which allows you to specify the source from which to generate your images.
This allows administrators to control a set of base or “builder images” and then users can layer on top of. The build source could be a GIT location, if you want OpenShift to build your application container images from source.
It could also be a binary like a WAR/JAR file, if you want us to integrate with your existing application build process. Users can also customize the build process and create their own S2I images.
